Giving Thanks for Family at Our Place — Local dignitaries help serve over 1,000 Thanksgiving meals to region’s homeless and working poor.

VICTORIA, B.C. – Local dignitaries and friendly volunteers joined Our Place staff to make everyone feel like family this Thanksgiving. Nearly 1,000 of Victoria’s most vulnerable citizens joined Our Place’s family table for a special Thanksgiving meal on Wednesday, Oct. 5 through the generous support of donors, community groups and volunteers. Local politicians (civic, provincial and federal) rolled up their sleeves to dish out a full meal of turkey, potatoes, garden veg and all the trimmings.
“Thanksgiving is a special time to be with loved ones. For many people who are struggling, we’re the closest family they have,” said Don Evans, executive director of Our Place. “We want everyone to feel a sense of belonging and enjoy a great meal.”
Our Place kitchen staff was busy preparing 1,000 lbs of turkey, 500 lbs of potatoes, 250 lbs of stuffing, 200 lbs of vegetables, 25 gallons of gravy, 55 lbs of cranberry sauce, 125 pumpkin pies and 1,500 cups of coffee.
